Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item, or perhaps modelled on an Italian lexical item. Etymons: rock n.¹, alum n.¹

Etymology: < rock n.¹ + alum n.¹, after French alun de roche (a1374 in Middle French; compare Anglo-Norman alome de roche (1387 or earlier), alum Roche (1430 or earlier), and Middle French (Tournai) alun en roque (1368)) or Italian allume di rocca (first half of the 14th cent.; beginning of the 14th cent. as †allume di rocco ). Compare post-classical Latin alumen de roca (1164 in a French source), alumen de rocco (c1215 in a British source), Spanish alumbre de roque (late 16th cent.), and also Spanish piedra alumbre (a1525), Portuguese pedra-ume (16th cent.), in same sense, which show substitution of the respective Spanish and Portuguese reflexes of classical Latin petra rock, stone (see petro- comb. form¹). Compare earlier roche alum n.
