Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Robert , -ian suffix.
Etymology: < the name of Robert the Strong (d. 866), count of Anjou and Blois + -ian suffix. Compare French Robertien , noun and adjective (both late 19th cent. or earlier with reference to Robert the Strong). Compare Robertine adj. and earlier Robertinian n.Compare the following isolated occurrence of Robertian , recorded slightly earlier with reference to various individuals with the forename Robert (see Robert n.1):1895 Rep. & Trans. Devonshire Assoc. 27 381 There are undistinguished Roberts holding under Baldwin, besides Roberts de Bello Mont and Pontecardonis; but it is a hopeless task—the endeavour to make up out of their holdings, the three hides which Fitz Gervin is said to hold in demesne. All we can say is that most of these Robertian tenures are in the north of the county, and so far may be held to favour the Chittlehampton theory.
