Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin risorius, musculus risorius.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin risorius (in musculus risorius: J. D. Santorini Observationes anatomicæ (1724) i. 33) < post-classical Latin risorius ridiculous (6th cent.), laughing (13th cent.) < classical Latin rīsor laugher ( < rīs- , past participial stem of rīdēre to laugh (see rident adj.) + -or -or suffix) + -ius, suffix forming adjectives. Compare French risorius de Santorini (1765), risorius (1803 as adjective).
Anatomy.
More fully risorius muscle. A flat muscle originating from the fascia of the masseter muscle and inserting into the corner of the mouth, which it draws laterally, as in smiling.The risorius is variable in size and form and is sometimes absent.
