Etymology: Probably the reflex of a borrowing < early Scandinavian (compare Norwegian regional (western) raudn , variant of Norwegian raun (earlier *raunn ) rowan n.1, showing West Norse dissimilation of early Scandinavian nn to dn , a characteristic feature of Icelandic, Faroese, Norn, and certain western Norwegian dialects). Compare earlier rowan n.1
