Etymology: < rock v.1 + -a-, connective element + bye (in bye-bye int.1 and n.1). Compare earlier lullaby int. and n., hushaby int.
Used to soothe an infant to sleep, esp. in accompaniment to the rocking of a cradle or the rocking of the infant in one's arms. Frequently in nursery rhymes, esp. in rock-a-bye, baby. Also in (usually humorous) extended use. Cf. hushaby int., lullaby int. and n.
