Etymology: < French ouragan (1685 or earlier), either < Old Algonquin ȣragan (pronounced /oraːkan/; 17th cent.; compare Algonquin onàgan) or < Old Montagnais ȣragan (pronounced /oraːkan/; 17th cent.; compare Montagnais ulagan, unàkan), or partly < each of them. N.E.D. (1909) gives the pronunciation as (rō^u·găn) /ˈrəʊɡən/.

Canadian. Now chiefly historical.
