1. A style of popular music, originating in Jamaica in the mid 1960s as a development of ska, characterized by a slower, more even tempo and prominent syncopated bass lines, and widely viewed as a precursor to or early form of reggae. Cf. reggae n., ska n.Recorded earliest in attributive use.
