Etymology: < classical Latin rōr-, rōs dew < the same Indo-European base as (with different vocalism) Old Church Slavonic rosa , Old Russian rosa (Russian rosa ), Lithuanian rasa , in the same sense; compare also Vedic Sanskrit rasa sap, juice, liquid. Compare French rore (1527). Compare earlier rorid adj., rory adj., and roriferous adj.
Obsolete. rare.

Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Dutch. Or (ii) a borrowing from Middle Low German. Etymons: Dutch roeren; Middle Low German rōren, rūren.
Etymology: < Middle Dutch roeren to move, stir, to touch, to set in motion, to mention (Old Dutch ruoren to touch; Dutch roeren ) or its cognate Middle Low German rōren (also as rūren, rȫren, etc.; Old Saxon hrōrian ), further cognate with Old English hrēran , Old Frisian hrēra , Old High German hruoren , ruoren (Middle High German rüeren , ruoren , German rühren ), Old Icelandic hrœra , ultimately < an Indo-European base with the underlying sense ‘to mix’ also represented by Sanskrit -śīrta mixed and ancient Greek κεραννύναι to mix (see crater n.). Compare earlier rorer n.
