Origin: A borrowing from Latin; originally modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Latin acrolithos, acrolithus.
Etymology: < classical Latin acrolithos (Vitruvius), acrolithus (attested in an inscription) having extremities of marble < Hellenistic Greek ἀκρόλιθος having the ends of stone < ancient Greek ἄκρο- acro- comb. form + λίθος stone (see -lith comb. form); originally after German Akrolith (1835 in the passage translated in quot. 1847). Compare earlier acrolithan adj., acrolithic adj.
