Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Rotalia , -ine suffix1.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Rotalia (see rotalian adj.) + -ine suffix1. Compare scientific Latin Rotalina, former family name (C. G. Ehrenberg 1838, in Physikal. Abhandl. der Königl. Akad. der Wissensch. zu Berlin, table between pp. 120 and 121; earlier (de Blainville 1828) as genus name).

Of, relating to, or characteristic of the foraminiferan genus Rotalia or a larger group to which it belongs (cf. rotalid n.); rotalid, rotaliform.The rank of foraminiferan taxa is variable, and a distinction of sense between rotalid and rotaline is not consistently observed.
