Origin: A borrowing from Malay. Etymon: Malay roti canai.
Etymology: < Malay roti canai (1970 or earlier) < roti bread ( < Hindi roṭī roti n.2) + canai to roll (dough) thinly (1970 or earlier; probably a specific use of canai to grind down, to sharpen).
In Malaysia and Malaysian communities elsewhere: fried unleavened bread, having a chewy, flaky texture and typically served with a curried dipping sauce as a light meal or snack. Cf. roti prata n.
