单词 romonger
释义

romongern.

Forms:

α. early Middle English rumongour (as surname), Middle English romanger (as surname), Middle English romangere (as surname), Middle English rommongoure, Middle English romonger, Middle English romongour, Middle English rumangur (as surname).

β. Middle English rosemonger (as surname), Middle English rosmonger (as surname), Middle English rosmongere (as surname).

Origin: Probably a borrowing from early Scandinavian, combined with an English element. Etymon: monger n.1
Etymology: Probably < the early Scandinavian word represented by Old Icelandic hross horse n. + monger n.1 The first element was probably associated early on with Old French ros, (rare, Northern) ro horse (c1165; probably < either Middle Dutch ros or Middle High German ros horse n.).Earliest attested as a surname. The name of a certain Alanus Rosemonger (also Rosmonger , Rosmongere , and Romanger , Romangere , Romonger ) is mentioned in several Oxford charters whose originals date from c1139 to c1200 (compare quot. a1450, from a late copy of a charter apparently originally drawn up c1139); it is unclear whether these refer to one or more people bearing the same name. The surname seems originally to have meant ‘horse-dealer’, but in the course of time the first element probably became semantically opaque (compare the apparently tautologous romongours of hors in quot. 1340). The Old French text underlying quot. 1340 (L. du Bois La somme le roi (1280)) apparently shows a variant of Old French maguignon , Middle French, French maquignon horse-dealer (see macquignon n.), which does not acquire a pejorative connotation until later (1508 in sense ‘unscrupulous and fraudulent horse-dealer’, 1559 in sense ‘any dishonest trader’).
Obsolete.
A dealer, a trader, originally spec. a horse-dealer.
