Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin acronychos; Greek ἀκρόνυχος.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin acronychos (4th or 5th cent.; also as acronicos , achronicus ) and its etymon ancient Greek ἀκρόνυχος at nightfall, in Hellenistic Greek also rising at sunset < ἀκρο- acro- comb. form + νύξ night (see nycti- comb. form). Compare French acronyque (1690). Compare later acronical adj.On the spelling history see note at acronical adj.
