Etymology: < post-classical Latin rufo-, combining form (in e.g. rufo-fulvus (1763 or earlier)) of classical Latin rūfus red (see rufous adj.); compare -o- connective. Compare rufi- comb. form.Chiefly found in borrowings and adaptations of post-classical Latin words, exemplified below.
1. Zoology (chiefly Entomology) and Botany. Prefixed to adjectives denoting colour, with sense ‘of a rufous shade’.
