Etymology: < acrospire v. + -ed suffix1.See Eng. Dial. Dict. at acrospire v. for 19th-cent. use of ackerspired, ackersprit, acresprit in Cheshire, Shropshire, and Suffolk in sense (especially of potatoes) ‘having sprouts’. See Sc. National Dict. at aikaspire, aikyspired adj. for 20th-cent. Orkney use in sense (of cloth) ‘mouldy’.
Obsolete.
Of barley or other grain used for malting: having an acrospire; (excessively) sprouted at both ends; (of malt) produced from such grain.
