Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: French ruana; Spanish ruana.
Etymology: < French ruana (1810 in the passage translated in quot. 1814), and its etymon American Spanish ruana (second half of the 18th cent. or earlier), probably short for manta ruana rough blanket sometimes worn as a cloak by the poor (early 16th cent. or earlier) < manta manta n. + the feminine of an adjective ruano, of uncertain origin.Spanish ruano has variously been identified as a use as adjective of ruano soldier from the lower social classes recruited from the streets (c1300; ultimately < †rúa street (1129) < post-classical Latin ruga street: see rew n.2), a derivative of ruán Rouen cloth (compare roan n.2), and a variant of roano roan adj.
A South American cape or poncho, worn esp. in Colombia and Peru.
