Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: ruin n., -iform comb. form.
Etymology: < ruin n. + -iform comb. form, after French ruiniforme ( R.-J. Haüy Traité de minéralogie (1801) IV. 457) or its model German ruinenförmig (1786 or earlier). Compare Italian ruiniforme (1817).
Geology.
Presenting the appearance of ruins; (of marble or other decorative stone) having distinctive markings likened to the outline of ruined buildings (cf. ruin n. Compounds 2).

1805 R. Jameson Treat. External Characters Minerals 22 Ruiniform. Resembles something broken or ruined, as towns, &c. It occurs only in Florentine marble, which is from this circumstance called landscape marble.
