Origin: A borrowing from Russian. Etymon: Russian rubaška.
Etymology: < Old Russian rubaška shirt (1568; Russian rubaška ) < rub′′ piece of cloth, poor clothes ( < the base of Old Russian rubiti to cut (see rouble n.); compare from the same base Russian regional ruba working clothes, poor clothes, rags) + -aška, suffix forming nouns.In plural forms rubashki, rubashky after the Russian plural form.
Now chiefly historical.
A type of shirt or tunic traditionally worn by Russian peasants.
