As adjective < post-classical Latin ruptorius causing eruption (a1250 in a British source) < classical Latin rupt- , past participial stem of rumpere + -ōrius -ory suffix2. Compare Anglo-Norman and Middle French, French ruptoire (13th cent. in Anglo-Norman as adjective; 2nd half of 15th cent. in Middle French as noun), Spanish ruptorio (late 15th cent. as noun and adjective), Portuguese ruptório (1601 as noun), Italian rottorio (1583 as noun).
