a. Roman History. Any place in which sacred objects were deposited and kept; the adytum of a temple; also, a small apartment in a house where the images of the penates were kept.‘In the time of the emperors, the name sacrarium was sometimes applied to a place in which a statue of an emperor was erected’ ( Smith's Dict. Grk. & Rom. Antiq., 1842, s.v.).
