Compare Middle Low German rischen (German regional (Low German) rüsken).Also attested early in place names (probably in the sense ‘characterized by the growth of rushes’), as Risendene, Hertfordshire (1086; now Rushden), Ressenden, Northamptonshire (1200; also Rissenden (14th cent. in a copy of an early 12th-cent. charter; 1086 as Risdene; now Rushden), etc.
Made of a rush or rushes.
