Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: ray-grass n.
Etymology: Alteration of ray-grass n. after rye n.1, by folk-etymological association with that word.
1. Any of several tufted grasses of the genus Lolium, esp. L. perenne and L. multiflorum, extensively cultivated as fodder and pasture grasses, and also commonly used for lawns. Also with distinguishing word.drunken, perennial, Wimmera ryegrass, etc.: see the first element.
