Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French réveillon.
Etymology: < French réveillon (1750 in the specific sense; 1531 in Middle French in the (now regional) general sense ‘small meal taken by a group of people at night’) < réveiller (see reveille n.) + -on -oon suffix.Not fully naturalized in English. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) records only the non-naturalized pronunciation (revēiyoṅ) /revɛjɔ̃/.
In France and other French-speaking countries: a feast or celebration held in the early hours of the morning; (originally) one held after midnight Mass on Christmas Eve; (later also) one taking place on the morning of New Year's Day.
