Etymology: < the name of Lieutenant General (later General) Sir Samuel (Sam) James Browne (1824–1901), British army officer, who designed a belt of this kind.Browne is credited with customizing his military belt with a supporting diagonal shoulder strap to facilitate the drawing of his officer's sword with a single hand, after losing his left arm in the Indian Rebellion of 1857–8.
1. In full Sam Browne belt. A leather belt with a supporting strap that passes diagonally over the right shoulder, worn by army and police officers (originally commissioned officers of the British Army). Also more generally: any belt of this style.
