Compounds

General use as a modifier, esp. with the sense ‘typical or characteristic of a saucebox; impudent, impertinent’, as in saucebox remark, etc.The following quotation, included by O.E.D. Suppl. (1982), from C. E. Pearce Madame Vestris & her Times (1923) xi. 116 purports to be from a newspaper review of an 1825 theatrical production, but it has not been possible to verify this: 'We thought the stamping sort of sauce-box air with which she marched away to the tune of the ‘Dashing White Sergeant’ was too much in keeping with her notorious male-attire exhibitions.'
