单词 scapulary
释义

scapularyn.

/ˈskapjʊləri/
Forms: Middle English scapelori, Middle English scapelry, chapolory, Middle English scapelerey, scaplerie, scaplerye, scaplor(e)y, scapelarie, scapelory, ( kapelary), skaplorie, Middle English, 1600s scapelary, scapularie, 1500s skapellarye, Middle English– scapulary.
Etymology: < medieval Latin scapulārium, a variant of scapulāre scapular n. (the plural scapulāria being common to the two singular forms). Compare French scapulaire , Spanish escapulario , Portuguese escapulario . The confusion of the ending with Latin -ōrium , -ory suffix1, appears in the Anglo-Norman eschapeloyre (J. de Garlandia, 12th cent.), whence apparently the 14th cent. form chapolory. The 15th cent. form kapelary, if not a mere scribal error, may be compared with medieval Latin capulāre, capulārium, Old French capillaire, which seem to be etymologizing alterations of scapulārium (as if derived < caput head).
