Brit. /ˌskɒtlənd ˈjɑːd/, U.S. /ˌskɑtlən(d) ˈjɑrd/
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Scotland Yard.
Etymology: < Scotland Yard, the name of the headquarters of the London Metropolitan Police < Great Scotland Yard, the name of a short street off Whitehall Place in Westminster, London. From their foundation in 1829 until 1890 the Metropolitan Police headquarters were situated in a former private house at 4 Whitehall Place, with a rear entrance in Great Scotland Yard, which became the police station for the 1st Company. In 1890 the headquarters moved to purpose-built new premises on the Victoria Embankment, Westminster, named New Scotland Yard (now the Norman Shaw Buildings); in 1967 they moved again to 10 Broadway, Westminster, retaining this name. It was the site of the medieval lodgings of the King of Scotland, and is referred to earlier as ‘a parcel of land late of the King of Scotts’ (1440), ‘the ground called Scotland’ (1519), ‘le Scotland ground’ (a1547).
