Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin scīlicet.
Etymology: < classical Latin scīlicet evidently, that is to say, (in ironic use) doubtless, probably contracted < scīre licet it is permitted to know < scīre to know (see science n.) + licet it is permitted (see liceat n.).
