Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin scissilis.
Etymology: < classical Latin scissilis (of minerals) easily split, fissile (applied specifically to a form of alum), (of clothing) torn, tattered < sciss- , past participial stem of scindere scind v. + -ilis -il suffix. Compare French scissile (1611 in Cotgrave; 1561 in Middle French as noun), Italian scissile (1550).
1. Originally: designating a form of alum readily split into laminae (now historical). In later use: capable of being cut or split (also figurative).
