A name for various fishes: (a) U.S. a marine food fish of the family Serranidæ; cf. jewfish n.; (b) U.S. a sciænoid fish, Cynoscion nobilis of California (white sea bass); (c) U.S. the black sea bass, Centropristis striatus, found along the Atlantic coast of North America; (d) U.S. the sturgeon, Acipenser transmontanus, of the Pacific coast ( Cent. Dict.); (e) = bass n.1 2; loup n.4
