Etymology: < self- prefix + biography n., perhaps after German Selbstbiographie (late 18th cent. or earlier; now usually Selbstbiografie ). Compare slightly later autobiography n. and see discussion at that entry.
An account of the life of an individual written by himself or herself; an autobiography. Also: the genre comprising such work.
