Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin sēricum , -graph comb. form.
Etymology: < seri- (in classical Latin sēricum silk: see Seric adj.) + -graph comb. form. In sense 1 probably after French sérigraphe (1880 or earlier in this sense, in a pamphlet about the instrument; compare quot. 1881); compare earlier serimeter n. With sense 2 compare serigraphy n.
1. Textiles. Any of various devices for testing the uniformity, strength, elasticity, etc., of silk or, in later use, other fine yarns (as rayon, nylon, etc.). Cf. serimeter n.
