Etymology: < self- prefix + immolate v. Compare earlier self-immolated adj., self-immolation n.
1. intransitive. To sacrifice oneself; to offer oneself as a sacrifice. Frequently figurative and in extended use: to destroy one's own career, reputation, etc., esp. inadvertently. Also (and in earliest use) transitive (reflexive) in the same sense.
