Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French sémaphore.
Etymology: < French sémaphore (1806 or earlier denoting the apparatus for making signals) < ancient Greek σῆμα sign, signal (see sema n.) + French -phore -phore comb. form. Compare earlier semaphoric adj.
1. A signalling apparatus consisting of an upright post with one or more arms that can be moved in a vertical plane, different positions of the arm or arms representing different letters or messages.Originally used for sending telegraphic messages and called a telegraph (cf. telegraph n. 1).
