Etymology: < modern Latin sēmi-metallum: see semi- prefix 1b, 2c(j)Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: semi-ˈmetal.
Originally a non-malleable metal. Now usually signifying incomplete metallic character in other physical properties, esp. electrical conductivity; spec. an element (as arsenic, antimony, bismuth) or other substance having properties intermediate between those of true metals and those of semiconductors.
