Etymology: < self n. + -ism suffix. Compare earlier selfist n.
Preoccupation with or concentration on one's own interests or affairs; selfishness; self-centredness. Also: spec. a theory or doctrine which maintains that regard for personal interest is the primary motive for human action (cf. selfish adj. 1b).
