Etymology: < serval n. + -ine suffix1, after scientific Latin servalinus, specific name (1834: see note).In servaline cat (see main sense) after scientific Latin Felis servalina ( W. Jardine Lions, Tigers, &c. (1834) 232).
Zoology.
Originally: designating any of several species of small spotted wildcat or catlike mammal (now only in servaline genet n. at Compounds). In later use also: designating a serval ( Leptailurus serval) of a type with a darker coat and smaller spots (originally thought to be a separate species). Occasionally also as n.
