Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin sensu lato.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin sensu lato in the broad sense (1755 or earlier) < classical Latin sensū , ablative of sensus sense n. + lātō , ablative of lātus broad (see late adj.2), after post-classical Latin sensu latiore ‘in a broader sense’ (1604 or earlier; also latiore sensu (8th cent. in a British source)). Compare sensu stricto adv.Compare the following slightly earlier example of post-classical Latin sensu latiore in an English context:1848 Jurist 25 Nov. 492/1 Equivalent to the ‘dominium’ sensu latiore of the classical jurists.
