Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin septi-.
Etymology: < classical Latin septi-, combining form (in e.g. septizōnium septizone n.) of septem seven (see septem- comb. form); compare -i- connective. Compare septem- comb. form.Attested earliest in the Latin loans septifolium (Old English; see α. forms at septfoil n. and adj.), septiform adj.1 (late Middle English), septimontial adj., septipedal adj. (early 17th cent.). Formations within English are found from the early 17th cent.; an early example is septipartite adj. Compare French septi- (formations in which are found from at least the late 18th cent.). Classical Latin septi- is used to form adjectives, several of which have parallels formed with septem-; compare septichordis (also septemchordis), septipēs (also septempedālis).
Forming adjectives and nouns with the sense ‘having or consisting of seven —’, chiefly modelled on Latin words.

Combining with second elements ultimately of Latin origin. Compare French septi- (formations in which are found from the early 19th cent., e.g. septifrage septifragal adj.).
