Etymology: < classical Latin sexāgēsimus sixtieth (see Sexagesima n.) + -al suffix1. Compare post-classical Latin sexagesimalis Sexagesima (11th cent. in Dominica sexagesimalis Sexagesima Sunday), also designating a number system based on 60, and (as noun) in sense ‘sexagesimal number’ (both 1647 in the source of quots. 1647 at sense A. and 1647 at sense B.). Compare earlier quadragesimal n. Compare also earlier sexagenary adj.

Proceeding by sixties; spec. designating a number system based on the number 60 rather than the usual 10; relating to or involving such a system (= sextal adj.). Also: involving or based on division into sixty equal parts (as seconds and minutes).
