单词 pinnothere
释义

pinnotheren.

Forms: 1600s pinnoter, 1600s pinnotere, 1600s 1800s pinnothere, 1800s pinnoteer.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin pīnotērēs, pinnotērēs.
Etymology: < classical Latin pīnotērēs (also pinnotērēs, pīnothērās, pīnothērēs) < ancient Greek πινοτήρης < πῖνα , πίννα pinna n.1 + τηρεῖν to guard (see terotechnology n.). The classical Latin variant pīnothērēs , as if < ancient Greek θηρᾶν to hunt (see theralite n.), was adopted as the scientific Latin genus name Pinnotheres by Latreille 1807. Compare Middle French pinnotere (1562 in the source translated in quot. 1601 at main sense, also as pinotère; French pinnothère). N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (pi·noþīəɹ) /ˈpɪnəʊθɪə(r)/, (pi·noəɹ) /ˈpɪnəʊtɪə(r)/.
Obsolete.
