Forms: Old English betrymian, Middle English betremien, Middle English bitrum(i)en /y/.
Etymology: Late Old English betrymian, < be- prefix 1 + *trymian, earlier trymman to strengthen, fortify, < trum firm, strong. Compare the earlier Old English ymb-trymman, ymb-trymian. The sense passed from that of ‘fortify all round’ to that of ‘surround’ simply, and ‘beset, besiege.’
