释义

sexcentenaryadj.n.

Brit. /ˌsɛksɛnˈtiːn(ə)ri/, /ˌsɛksɛnˈtɛn(ə)ri/, U.S. /ˌsɛksɛnˈtɛnəri/, /ˌsɛk(s)ˈsɛntnˌɛri/
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Partly formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: Latin sexcenteni , -ary suffix1; sex- comb. form, centenary n.
Etymology: Originally (i, in sense A. 1) < post-classical Latin sexcenteni six hundred each (6th cent. in a grammarian as sescenteni (the usual classical Latin form is sescēnī ); < classical Latin sexcentī (also sescentī ) six hundred ( < sex six (see sex- comb. form) + centum a hundred: see centum n.2) + -ēnī , suffix forming distributive adjectives, after e.g. sēnī six apiece, six at a time, six) + -ary suffix1. In later uses (ii) < sex- comb. form + centenary n. With sense A. 2 compare earlier tercentenary adj. With use as noun compare earlier bicentenary n., tercentenary n., etc.
