Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese shōnen.
Etymology: < Japanese shōnen (in e.g. shōnen manga ; compare manga n.2), (as simplex) youth, boy, especially schoolboy or young teenage boy (c892 as seunen in senses ‘age of youth, young person’; 1603 as xônen in Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam) < Middle Chinese elements meaning ‘young’ and ‘year, age’; compare Chinese shàonián early youth, teenager (of either gender). Compare shojo n.
attributive. Of or designating a genre of Japanese comics and animated films aimed primarily at a young male audience and typically characterized by an emphasis on action-filled plots. Contrasted with shojo n. Frequently in shonen manga (cf. manga n.2).
