Etymology: < the name of Richard Edwin Shope (1902–66), U.S. pathologist, who described the fibroma and its causative virus in 1932 ( Jrnl. Exper. Med. 66 793 and Jrnl. Exper. Med. 66 803), and the papilloma and its causative virus in 1933 ( Jrnl. Exper. Med. 68 607).

Biology.

Designating a transmissible soft-tissue tumour (fibroma or myxoma) of rabbits, the condition of having such a tumour or tumours, and the poxvirus (genus Leporipoxvirus) which causes such tumours.The poxvirus causing Shope fibromas is closely related to that which causes myxomatosis in rabbits.
