Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese shishitō.
Etymology: < Japanese shishitō, shortened < shishi-tōgarashi < shishi lion ( < Middle Chinese; compare Chinese shīzi : see Shih Tzu n.) + tōgarashi capsicum, chilli pepper (see note), so called because its tip is said to resemble the head of a lion.Japanese tōgarashi is apparently formed < (noun) Tang dynasty, China, (nominal prefix) foreign ( < Middle Chinese; compare Chinese táng Tang n.5) + -garashi, combining form of karashi mustard (seed) (8th cent.), use as noun of karashi (now karai) pungent.
More fully shishito pepper. A small, typically mild variety of chilli pepper, harvested while green and used in East Asian cooking.
