Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin sīmus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin sīmus having a flattened nose, (of nostrils) flattened, splayed ( < ancient Greek σῑμός flat-nosed, (of the nose) snub, flat, bent upwards, uphill, hollow, concave, in Hellenistic Greek specifically with reference to the bottom of the liver (compare quot. 1634 at sense 1), also denoting a kind of fish; of unknown origin) + -ous suffix.Ancient Greek Σῑμός (alongside various derivative forms) is widely attested as a personal name; compare the Mycenaean Greek names simo , sima . In simous blenny (compare quot. 1803 for simous blenny n. at Compounds) after scientific Latin Blennius simus (W. Sujef 1779, in Acta Acad. Sci. Imperialis Petropolitanae 2 198).
1. Bending or curving inward; concave. Also (in later use chiefly): (of the nose) snub, flat.
