Etymology: < French simplifier to bring (a person) to a state of simplicity, unity, or purity (mid 15th cent. in Middle French as simplefier ), to make less complex or elaborate (late 15th cent.) < simple simple adj. + -ifier -ify suffix.Compare post-classical Latin simplificare (9th cent.), Catalan simplificar (14th cent.), Spanish simplificar (early 17th cent., earliest in religious contexts), Italian semplificare (early 18th cent., earliest in the sense ‘to make less complex’).
