单词 skye
释义

Skyeadj.n.

Brit. /skʌɪ/, U.S. /skaɪ/
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Skye.
Etymology: < the name of the Isle of Skye (Scottish Gaelic Eilean Sgitheanach), the largest island of the Inner Hebrides off the west coast of Scotland. The origin of the place name is unknown. It is first recorded in Hellenistic Greek as Σκητίς (Ptolemy); compare post-classical Latin Scitis (7th cent. in a continental source), Old Icelandic Skíð, and Early Irish Scí (genitive Sceth, Scottish Gaelic Sgìth, now only in Cuan Sgìth, the name of the Little Minch, lit. ‘sound of Skye’). The name of the island is recorded in English from at least the mid 16th cent. (earliest in Older Scots as Sky). Scottish Gaelic Sgitheanach (in Eilean Sgitheanach, the current name of the island, lit. ‘Isle of Skye’) is an adjective form derived from the original name; this Scottish Gaelic name is also sometimes recorded in Older Scots contexts, e.g. as Skyane (1549) and Skianacha (1690)). A folk-etymological interpretation of this name as a derivative of Scottish Gaelic sgiath wing, promontory (compare sgiathanach winged, having promontories) is already attested in the 16th cent.
