Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek σκιά , -scope comb. form.
Etymology: < ancient Greek σκιά shadow (see scio- comb. form) + -scope comb. form.In form scioscope in quot. 1881 at sense 1 after words in scio- comb. form (compare especially sciopticon n.). In sense 2 perhaps after German Skiaskop (1891 or earlier). Compare slightly earlier skiascopy n.
1. Photography. A dark chamber for attachment to a plate camera so as to obviate the need for a dark cloth over the photographer's head when focusing. Obsolete. rare.
